In a bookshelf at home, I have a match box without an ignition strip. I have cursed the box´s dysfunctionality many times, when I have needed a light. The matches lie there, promising fire, light, energy, but their only function is to make my need even more obvious. The match box is a work by Hans Isaksson.

The installation now showing at Index includes a disco ball. In a similar way to the match box its possibilities are curtailed. The glitter is there and the music, but instead of giving us a sense of joy and a festive atmosphere it becomes an image of sorrow. The works of Hans Isaksson deal with human incapacity and vulnerability. His reference is not seldom gay culture, as in the velvety image of the gay clubs´ "darkrooms", which is shown here. A darkness which contains both promises and the exposed position of the individual.

Welcome!
