Throughout the whole history of photography one of the most frequent areas of application has been the pornographic image. Women´s sexuality has been defined by the male gaze. This has also been problemised and criticised by a number of artists.
But would it be possible to imagine images of women´s sexuality which are not defined by a male gaze? Images which deal with the female body and lust without degenerating into a mystifying or romantic attitude? I can hardly recall seeing any such images. Nevertheless, this is what Gisela Schink attempts. In her images the woman is not an object, nor is she seductive. There are no faces or glances searching for the observers eye. Neither is there a visual object for her desire. Just a subject.
