"I am the community - a lonely role concerned with the production of identity"
During Stockholm Art Week and Gallerinatten, Index – The Swedish Contemporary Art Foundation will present the performance installation The Actress; The Oracle; The Tragedy – Dress Rehearsal Rag by artist Iris Smeds.
Iris Smeds’ oeuvre revolves around issues of representation, identity as merchandise and art as entertainment. Working mainly with performance and video, her projects often deal with the monetary and spiritual value of art and identity.
The Actress; The Oracle; The Tragedy takes its starting point from ancient Greek theatre, specifically the story of the Oracle of Delphi and the birth of democracy. This work presents the Actress as a symbol for a modern citizen, one who has to perform her own identity in order to sell it. The performance is part of her ongoing research on the interconnectedness of theatre and democracy.
Iris Smeds (born 1984) lives and works in Stockholm. Her recent projects include I am the Path of Success/Paranoia is total Awerness, Galleri Rostrum, Malmö (2011), the play Alla ska dö men jag ska dö först, which premiered at Drottningholms Slottsteater (2012), the performance lecture In order to eat another man’s soul Skissernas museum (2013), and the formation of the punkband, Vaska Fimpen, which performed at MDT (2013) and Moderna Museet, Stockholm (2014). The Actress; The Oracle; The Tradgedy will be performed in full at Dramalabbet and PALs Performance Festival at Fylkingen later in 2014.
