Appropriate answers to various situations in the field of curatorial practice Lecture 12 March 2008 8 pm

Samples of realised and ongoing projects by Guillaume Désanges and François Piron from curatorial agency Work Method, reflecting their curatorial activity, their concerns about polymorphic activities and critical acts.

How to create a sustainable development adapted to curatorial practice? How to pile up identities instead of separating skills and territories? How to prepare an exhibition during a dull Parisian August? What is the “Barbapapa model”? All these questions will be developed and maybe answered along our lecture.

Work Method is a Paris-based agency run by the two of us, both independent French art critics and curators, to initiate and manage individual and collaborative projects, including exhibitions, performances, lecture programs, seminars, and editorial projects consequent of our involvement in contemporary art. Our association is purposed to structure an independent art criticism and curatorial activity, sharing projects on intellectual, economical and logistical levels.

Based on a desire of self-organization, a culture of enthusiasm, and a shared interest for playful ways of doing, this association of two curators is a tool aimed to reflect on the situation of the curator/art critic in the art field today, his autonomy, his status, his possible freedom in the way he can act. The lecture will be based on a cross-over presentation of various projects. Some of them were run independently by one or the other, some others built collectively.

Guillaume will focus, among other things, on the performativity of the critical discourse, and the way he experiences this aspect in some lectures. François will narrate the process of creation of a new space in Paris, where the notion of ungraspable identity becomes concrete. We’ll finally share the presentation of two ongoing projects, “Jiri Kovanda Vs. Rest of the World”, and “Untouchable (the transparency ideal)”.
