Intersections
A project by Index at Trafo Gallery, Budapest

Index currently presents a project at Trafo Gallery in Budapest. Trafo's artistic director Hajnalka Somogyi has invited Index to be first institution in a series of events at Trafo, reflecting curatorial strategies at small-scale international institutions. Intersections deals with the various strategies in which Index productions are carried out, sometimes running parallel, sometimes crossing tracks, always with the aim of providing artist's with interesting and pertinent working conditions and the programme with a certain mobility.

In order to give Index' daily activities a representation, Index Archive, consisting of works on DVD, books, magazines, posters, and other printed matter will be at the audience's disposal at Trafo. In addition, Index premier artist Jesper Nordahl's work Jinnah Cricket Club, a DVD-installation produced by Index during 2004. Index and Trafo have provided Jesper Nordahl with a residency in Budapest, which also has allowed him to work on the billboard project, "1X1 tábla”, together with AKCIO! újság/ACTION! Magazine, Zöld Fiatalok/Young Greens, IgEN/YES and Gerilla Propaganda Kollektíva/Guerrilla Propaganda Collective. The billboard project is a collaboration between Index and Studio, Budapest. An artist talk will be given by Jesper Nordahl, at Trafo, 4 May 7 pm.

An important part of Index aims is to suggest other perspectives on educational practice in contemporary art. As a part of this, Intersections continues a project focussing environmental issues, initiated by Index and Swedish artist Henrik Håkansson in 2003. In collaboration with Trafo, a local day care centre and an ornithologist, children will be given opportunity to monitor the breeding in a small number of nesting boxes in the period of April - June. The project takes place in Pilsi Parkerdo, Mogyoróhegy.

In connection to the opening a panel discussion will be held at Trafo 4 pm - 6 pm. Participants: Miklos Erhardt (Big Hope, Budapest), Anca Gyemant (H.arta, Timisoara), Vít Havránek (Transzit, Prag), Helena Holmberg (Index, Stockholm), Hajnalka Somogyi (moderator, Trafo, Budapest), Mats Stjernstedt (Index, Stockholm) and Tibor Várnagy (Liget Gallery, Budapest)

We are indebted to Trafo for receiving and hosting Intersections, a gesture that provides Index with the challenge of working outside of our own, known context.
Intersections is made possible with the support from Swedish Institute.
